Six ways to spend a day

Everything in Da Nang is inside an hour of the beach.

A cable car into cloud forest, five marble hills full of caves, a headland with a Buddha on it, a mountain pass with the sea on one side, and two old towns close enough to be day trips. Pick the day, and the best way to book it.

Out for the day

Hoi An, Hue or My Son. Da Nang gives you the choice, and one spare day.

Almost every big day out here starts with a minibus at the hotel door. Three directions, what it costs to sit in each one, and how long you get back.

Ba Na Hills

A French village at 1,400 metres, reached by the longest cable car you will ever ride.

Twenty minutes hanging over jungle, then two stone hands holding a gold walkway above the cloud. Go on the first cars. By late morning the queue is long and the mountain has usually pulled a lid over itself.

After dark

At nine on a Saturday the bridge breathes fire, and the whole river turns to watch.

The Dragon Bridge spits flame and then water down its length at weekends, and half of Da Nang parks on the embankment for it. The other half is on the water, on a flat-bottomed boat with the city lights running past.

Mi Quang and a plastic stool

Da Nang eats on the pavement, and it eats better than Hanoi wants to admit.

Turmeric noodles with a rice cracker snapped over the top, banh xeo you roll yourself, seafood straight off the boats at Tho Quang. Book the market walk before the heat, the class that ends as lunch, the evening ride that stops at five kerbs.

What it costs

What a day out of Da Nang actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by what you pay. A good number of the best days here come in under the price of dinner at home.

Under $50

River cruises, the marble caves, coffee workshops and the shared minibus to Hoi An.

$50–150

The full-day standards: Ba Na Hills with the cable car, Hue over the pass, My Son with a boat back.

$150 and up

Private cars with a driver for the day, chartered boats and the once-a-trip splurges that earn it.

Only here

Three things that only happen on this stretch of coast.

Beaches and old towns run the length of Vietnam. A mountain of marble hollowed into shrines, a pass where the weather changes sides, and a hundred-metre Buddha watching the fishing fleet do not.

Inside the rock

The Marble Mountains

Five limestone hills stand in a row behind My Khe beach, and the biggest one is hollow. Stone stairs cut in the eighteenth century climb to shrines lit by holes in the roof, and a side passage drops into Am Phu, the cave the Nguyen kings treated as a model of hell. The stone carvers still work at the foot of it, which is why the whole village smells of wet marble dust.

Weather on both sides

The Hai Van Pass

The Truong Son range runs into the sea here, and the road climbs twenty-one kilometres over the top of it. The mountain splits the country’s weather: Da Nang can be in full sun while Hue sits under grey rain an hour north. The old gate at the summit was fought over for a century, the railway takes the low line along the cliffs, and most drivers now take the tunnel and miss all of it.

Above the fishing fleet

Lady Buddha on Son Tra

Sixty-seven metres of white stone stands on the Son Tra headland with her back to the mountain and her face to the harbour, which is exactly the point: fishermen leaving Da Nang keep her in sight for an hour. The pagoda grounds behind her hold eighteen arhat statues and a view down the whole beach, and the red-shanked douc langurs in the trees above are found nowhere else in the world in these numbers.

Book ahead

Four Da Nang bookings that run on somebody else’s timetable.

Most of this city can be arranged over breakfast for the same afternoon. These four run on cable-car hours, weekend schedules, monsoon swell and a two-and-a-half hour drive that has to happen twice.

  1. 01Han River Local Cruise by NightThe Dragon Bridge only breathes fire at weekends, at nine in the evening. Turn up on a Tuesday and it is just a bridge.
  2. 02Cham Island Snorkeling Daily Group Tour, Sunbathing, nice beachesBoats out to Cu Lao Cham stop running in the northeast monsoon and get pulled at short notice whenever the swell comes up.
  3. 03Full Day Golden Bridge and Ba Na Hills Small Group TourThe cable cars run to posted hours and the last one down does not wait. The cloud usually closes over the summit by late morning.
  4. 04Hue Imperial Day Trip, Hai Van Pass Train, & LunchHue is two and a half hours over the pass, twice. The day starts early and there is nothing flexible about the return leg.
October to December

When the rain arrives it does not drizzle, and the boats stop.

Da Nang takes its whole year of rain in about three months. Typhoons come off the East Sea, the surf shuts the island boats, the Ba Na summit disappears and Bach Ma closes its road. The answer is to go under a roof: a kitchen, a coffee bench, a massage table, or the Cham gallery nobody visits in good weather.
